What the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is All About

For those planning to be a nurse another test that is normally required by a nursing school is the TEAS or Test of Essential Academic Skills. This exam covers four areas: English, Math, Reading and Science.  These tests are held twice a year - in January for those enrolling in the Fall or in July for those enrolling in the Spring. You can register online and the cost is around $40 to $50.

Each of the test’s sections has multiple choice questions which are generally broken down as follows:

  • English – This section will have fifty-five (55) questions about grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, contextual words and spelling and will determine your knowledge in these areas.

  • Math – This section will have forty-five(45) questions about algebraic equations, fractions and decimals, metric conversion, percentages, ratio and proportions and whole numbers – and will determine your knowledge in each of these areas.

  • Reading – This section will have forty (40) questions about inferences and conclusion, paragraph comprehension as well as passage comprehension – testing your knowledge in each area.
  • Science – This section will have thirty (30) questions about anatomy and physiology, basic physical principles, biology, chemistry, general science, science knowledge and science reasoning – testing your level of comprehension in these areas.

The TEAS examination allows a maximum of three hours and twenty-nine minutes with scratch paper and pencil provided. No calculators are allowed so you are strictly on your own.  Most results are sent directly to the nursing school so you will get the results within forty-eight hours of the test. You are allowed to take the test again if you fail it.
Studying for the TEAS requires the use of a study guide that has comprehensive information about the subjects to be tested on this examination. You should also use online practice assessments and it is recommended that you take one immediately before you start studying as it will give you a guideline of what your weakest areas are and what you should concentrate on. You should take periodic Practice Tests right up until your scheduled exam so that you continue to see your areas of concern.
Do not wait until a few days before the examination to start studying or to take your practice exams as you will need to be thoroughly prepared when you take the actual test so that you don’t have to take it again – since they are only offered twice a year it is imperative to get it right the first time!
