Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) Exam Information, Study Tips and Study Guide

The National Board for Certification of Hospice and Palliative Nurses organizes and administers the Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) program.

The certification exam is held in AMP test centers across the center.

Registration


Candidates can download an application and mail it with payment (money order, cashier's check or credit card)

Or, candidates can register for the CHPN exam at the NBCHPN website and pay online (Discover, Master Card, VISA)
Candidates will be informed if their eligibility is denied or confirmed, or may be asked for further information
Successful candidates will be informed on how to schedule an examination
Exams are held during three exam windows in a year, the months of March, June and December
Deadline for the paper application for the March exams is January 15th, April 15th for the June exams while the deadline for the December exams is October 15th
Deadline for online applications are May 15th, August 15th, November 15th for the March, June and December exams respectively.



Eligibility


Candidates must have a valid unrestricted nursing license from the United States, Canada or US territories.
Must have completed a graduate level nursing program, and Candidates must be a functional or soon to be functional Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS).

Candidates must hold a masters degree or something higher from and Advanced Practice Palliative Care and accumulated a minimum of 500 experience hours in palliative care within the year prior to the application.
Or, candidates must hold a post-master degree or something higher in an advanced practice program, as a nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist with a minimum of 500 hours post-master advanced practice experience in palliative care (indirect or direct) with the year prior to applying for the exam.



Exam Fees


The CHPN application fees are $295 for HPNA members and $395 for non-members



Exam Format


The CHPN exam has 150 multiple-choice format questions
135 of these questions are scored while 15 are pre-test questions that do not earn any score
The exam is 3 hours.

Patient Care: Life-limiting Conditions in Adult Patients (14% of the exam)
Patient Care: Pain Management (25%)
Patient Care: Symptom Management (27%)
Care of Patient and Family (11%)
Education and Advocacy (9%)
Interdisciplinary/Collaborative Practice (8%)
Professional Issues (6%)


30% of the questions test candidates ability to recall specific procedure or information
50% of the questions test candidates application knowledge of real-life situations
20% of the questions test candidates ability to analyze and synthesize information to determine the best solution



Other information


Answer choices for some questions may contain more than one answer that is partially correct. The candidate will have to identify the best choice

Candidates should come to the exam center on time. Candidates who are more that 15 minutes late will not permitted to enter the examination room.

Candidates must present two pieces of current identification, one of which must include a current photograph

Candidates should report to the exam proctor to receive their score reports at the end of the exam
