Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) Exam Information and Study Guide & Practice Test

 

The Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) exam is organized and administered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing. The body and exam was founded in 1980 to conduct certification process for flight nurses who provide emergency services. Visit the BCEN website http://admin.ena.org/bcen/ for more information. The CFRN exam is administered by Applied Measurement Professionals in test centers throughout the country.

Registration



Candidates can download an application from the BCEN website at http://admin.ena.org/bcen/
Completed forms and necessary documents are to be sent to

BCEN, CFRN® Exam,
915 Lee St.,
Des Plaines,
IL 60016.

After an application has been approved, candidates has a 90 day window to take the exam. The 90 days begins on the day of processing with a few days of grace to accommodate mailing.
Candidates are sent an authorization letter and information handbook by BCEN. The handbook contains necessary guidelines and information.
Candidates are expected to schedule an exam six weeks prior to the exam date.



Eligibility



Candidates must posses a valid non-restricted nursing license issued in the US or equivalent .
BCEN recommends the candidate has acquired up to two years of practical experience in flight nursing although it is not a mandated requirement for eligibility.



Exam Fees



Members of both ENA and ASTNA are required to pay $230.00 to sit for the CFRN exam. Candidates who are not members of ENA or ASTNA are required to pay $370.



Exam Format



• The CRFN exam is computer based and is made up of 180 questions in multiple-choice format.
• 150 of the question are scored while 30 questions are set as pre-test questions and do not add to the final score.
• Exam results are made available to the candidates immediately at the end of the exam and an ID card and certificate are mailed within four and six weeks.



Exam Contents


The CFRN exam has 4 main parts:

• Single System Emergencies: 63 items
• Multiple System Emergencies: 18 items
• Patient management: 44 items
• Safety issues: 16 items
• Professional Issues: 9 items



Other Information



• Candidates will have to complete a site registration and have their photograph taken at the test centers on the day of the exam.
• Candidates receive a computer exam orientation
• Calculators beepers and other electronic problem solving devices are not permitted.
• The CFRN certification is valid for four years.
