What is a Nurse Anesthetist?

medical2A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or CRNA must have a Bachelors Degree and be a Registered Nurse with a minimum of one year of experience as an acute care nurse. It requires a graduate program that takes between two to three years to complete and although it is not a Masters Degree, you will be almost through a Masters Program with this program.

The nurse anesthesia program consists of a curriculum that emphasizes anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, chemistry, biochemistry, physics and physiology. Its clinical component provides many anesthesia techniques that are used in surgical, obstetrical or procedures of all types.

This person will work directly with a physician, dentist or a health care team to provide acute medical care typically in an emergency room or a clinic. You will find opportunities for this position in public as well as private sectors and the United State military with positions available in pain clinics, dental offices, obstetrical delivery rooms, ambulatory care clinics, as well as physicians’ offices.

A Nurse Anesthetist has a lot of responsibility and essentially performs the same services as an anesthesiologist. With duties that include a physical assessment of the patient and preparing the patient for surgery or delivery of a baby, a CRNA is with the patient throughout the entire procedure and oversees recovery from the anesthesia as well. A Nurse Anesthetist monitors all body functions during the procedure and can modify the anesthetic to ensure maximum comfort and safety for the patient.

Because of the high level of responsibility this position is one of the highest paying jobs in nursing with an average salary around $165,000. Some CRNAs work independently with contracts directly with hospitals or physicians’ offices giving them the ability to work the hours they want and when they want to – making it a very nice opportunity for those who want more freedom.
