What Educational Requirements Are Needed to Become a Nurse?


If you are thinking of a career in nursing you might not realize what subjects are required to obtain a nursing degree. Many people think that just because they want to help people and have good communication skills that there is not much else required. But the reality is that you have to be knowledgeable in science and mathematics so it is a bit more challenging than you might think.

The first requirement is a high school diploma with good academic grades in algebra, biology, chemistry, English and psychology. The GED or CHSPE may also be acceptable.  Each nursing school has different requirements, and each has a Nursing Entrance Exam,  but all will have general testing on those primary subjects along with more in science and mathematics and reading comprehension. There are actually three avenues that you can take for a nursing career.

There are two and three year nursing programs with affiliated hospitals that offer hospital diploma programs in conjunction with local junior colleges. There is some on-site hospital time along with the basics in science, mathematics and English for a nursing certification. An Associate Degree in Nursing or AND can be earned after you have completed pre-nursing courses required by a school with each school’s requirements generally the same but there could be some variances depending on the school or state requirements. This is a two year program and is offered at hospital schools of nursing and some colleges or universities.

A Bachelors of Science in Nursing or BSN is the path to take if you want to take a more challenging role in management or as a leader with advancement opportunities more readily available to these students. This program is offered at colleges or universities. If you want to earn a master’s degree in nursing you are required to have a BSN before you can apply for that degree.
