When you go to a doctor’s office or to a clinic there are always nurses that are assisting the physician with any number of activities. Patients who come to see a doctor are coming because they have an ailment, a routine checkup or need other types of assistance.
Nurses in these environments will prepare the patients to see the doctor – taking their weight, blood pressure and other routine procedures. They prepare the rooms where the patients are seen so that it is sanitary and ready for the next patient. They assist the physician with examinations and administer medications or injections, draw blood or perform an EKG or other machinery. In addition they change and dress wounds or incisions and assist the doctor with minor surgeries performed in the office. They also maintain records and perform routine laboratory work.
Depending on the size of the office they might assist more than one doctor and routinely see many patients sometimes independently of the doctor if it is to perform just a change of a dressing on a wound – only bringing in the doctor if there is a problem. They often are required to do routine office work which means input into a computer and follow up with patients. If a prescription needs to be refilled with a pharmacy they would call it in for the patient.
