The nice thing about a nursing career is that there is really a lot of flexibility in terms of your specialty or the type of nursing that you pursue and some specialties offer built-in flexibility in terms of hours or the ability to work from home.
For example, if you work for a home health care agency you can be on call to provide nursing services for patients who are at home. This allows you the ability to fix your own hours and work out of your home so that for people with children you can oftentimes work around your schedule to set the appointment times.
With a position at a hospital or clinic or a job in a physician’s office you are more often subject to standard work hours although nursing is a profession that has many who work part-time hours – thereby giving you the flexibility of again working within your time schedule if you are attending school or have family obligations.
Other nursing positions that are more independent include clinical nurse specialists or nurse practitioners who often are able to set their own terms. Legal nurse consultants often work independently and can therefore work whatever hours that suits them. Those who specialize in patient rehabilitation or work in long-term care facilities usually are able to set their own schedule as well.
Working as a consultant for healthcare, medical or insurance organizations gives you the opportunity to work at home and a local community health center is happy to get whatever hours you are able to give them so they are also appreciative and easy to work with.
Other opportunities that offer many rewards is the chance to work with the Red Cross or the United Nations or other international organizations that provide nursing care in times of major disasters gives you the opportunity to travel but also an experience that is often life changing.
