What Makes a Candidate for Nurse Anesthetist

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

What makes a candidate perfect for Nurse Anesthesia? This kismet for the candidates has been occupying my mind for more than this past week. Personally I have spent years positioning myself to do well in preparation for anesthesia practice and now as a faculty member in a great teaching institution I am challenged to keep growing and setting the standard for the students and potential students to rise to. That is why I write now dear reader to tell you what it takes to prepare for Nurse Anesthesia School and eventual Nurse Anesthesia practice. This is no small undertaking. If you will allow me to share with you both personal and professional opinions about “getting in and doing well” in the profession of Nurse Anesthesia practice you will note that these are my opinions and do not represent any official word from any program.

Nursing; The Profession and Recession – From Jacksonville Florida

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Chances are you’ve been cared for at some time in your life by a nurse, but will there be enough nurses to go around when baby boomers hit retirement age?

WOKV’s Roxy Tyler works to answer those questions in her 3 part series that runs at 6:20am and 8:50am Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday on Jacksonville’s Morning News.

Tune in for an in-depth look at how the state of the economy has changed the nursing shortage in Northeast Florida and possibly the future of your health care.

The Recession is having a unique effect on the nursing industry. “Elective surgeries aren’t as plentiful as they used to be so that impacts our bottom line and our ability to serve more people”, says Debra Hernke, Chief Nursing Officer at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.

Careers in Medicine

Friday, May 15th, 2009

A lot of people are turning to careers in medicine today because they know that they are paying well and that the weakened economy hasn’t stopped them from growing in popularity. There is still a shortage of nurses and doctors in many areas, and the same is true for lab technicians, nursing assistants, and others who do similar jobs. People who work in the front office also have some problems with staff retention because the medical field is growing but people still seem reluctant to train for it. There are just more people needed than there are people available, and that’s very worrisome for those who work in the medical field and for those who need the care of these trained professionals.

Nursing on the rise as economy declines

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

With headlines that proclaim the woes of working-class America, and Michigan’s state unemployment rate reaching record highs, most Northern graduates are looking at a dismal job market. But as other graduates scramble to find a job within their majors, NMU nursing students will find themselves well-suited to locate work in this ailing economy.

“Health care is always a great field to get a job in (during) economically hard times,” said Kerri Schuiling associate dean and director of the School of Nursing. “Nursing offers a good job at a decent salary. It lets you support a family.”

And though nurses are always needed, a national nursing shortage has ensured that most students in NMU’s nursing department will graduate with confidence that they will find a job in their field.

According to statistics compiled by NMU’s Career Services Office, since 1998, 96.6 percent of people who graduated from NMU’s Bachelor’s of Science Nursing (BSN) program are currently employed, with 75 percent of them working in Michigan.

Schuiling said that usually the only people who graduate from Northern with degrees or certificates in nursing who don’t procure jobs as nurses are people who don’t wish to go into the profession anymore.

“(Our employment rate) is virtually 100 percent,” she said. “People aren’t employed (as nurses) because they didn’t want to be.”
