Becoming a nurse is a lifelong dream for many people but the long hours of schooling and then actual work can be stressful to many and become particularly difficult if you don’t know how to handle it. Some let the stress of the job and the responsibility get to them more than others and actually reach a point where they are so stressed that they totally burn out.
Becoming a nurse gives you some indications of the pressures that you will experience as a nurse because you are put under a lot of stress during your training alone but when you are on the job the reality of it can hit you especially hard if you don’t take steps to alleviate the constant stress. Here are some tips that might help:
- Exercise is a great way to relive the pressure of anyone that is overworked or under a lot of stress. If you regularly work out then you are a step ahead but if you don’t you should start taking walks, riding a bike or practicing yoga – anything of these activities will help.
- Watch your body for signs of physical or emotional stress that is expressing itself in sleeplessness or other signs that might signal you are reaching a breaking point.
- Use relaxation skills whenever possible during the day or your shift. Sit in a chair and remove your shoes and close your eyes. Take a deep breath and relax the muscles of your neck, face and shoulders. Repeat this several times and try to do it at intervals throughout the day.
- Try to look at your job from someone else’s point of view. In other words step outside yourself and think about how others handle the same job.
- Treat yourself – even if it is just a stop for a cup of coffee to give you a break. Do it and you will feel better.
